One of the things that's fascinated me as we've built Relate is how much meaning lives outside the transcript.

Think about the last conversation that really stuck with you. It probably wasn't because someone chose the perfect words. It was because they listened, they paused before answering, they sounded genuinely curious. Maybe they brought a little humor into a difficult conversation, or maybe they knew when to stay quiet instead of filling every silence. Those moments are hard to describe, but they're often the moments that determine whether relationships strengthen because trust grows or they degrade because trust quietly starts to erode.

When we started Relate, our goal wasn't to build another meeting recorder, it was to help people understand the conversations that shape their work. Whether that's closing a deal, coaching an employee, interviewing a candidate, or earning a customer's confidence.

As we've continued building Relate, one question kept coming up: if trust is built in conversations, why are we only measuring the words?

Yes, transcripts are incredibly useful. We no longer have to frantically take notes, wonder who said what, or lose track of important decisions and follow-up actions. AI has made it remarkably easy to capture a conversation and turn it into something searchable and shareable.

But they don't tell us how the conversation felt.

Two people can say exactly the same words and create completely different experiences for the people listening. Did someone sound confident or hesitant? Did they create space for other people to contribute? Was the energy collaborative or one-sided? Did they keep the conversation flowing naturally or unintentionally dominate it?

It shows up when the high performers, the ones who have options and have always had options, start quietly weighing them. And by the time you see it clearly enough to act on it, the most valuable people have already made their decision. The ones who stayed are the ones who didn't feel like they had somewhere better to go, and that is not the workforce you want carrying a transformation forward.

I've watched this happen to organizations with the best change management methodologies money could buy and the most expensive consultants in the room. The methodology wasn't the problem. The trust was the problem. You cannot paper over a trust deficit with a better communications plan.

The trust equation and why it matters so much right now

If our mission is to help people build stronger relationships, then we need to understand more than the transcript. We need to understand the conversation itself. That realization has shaped much of what we've been working on over the last year.

And, why we’re now excited to introduce Vocal Intelligence.

Vocal Intelligence brings vocal signals into Relate's trust analysis. Alongside the transcript, it analyzes things like tone, pace, energy, conversation flow, emotion, and even humor to create a more complete picture of how we communicate.

I think this points to something bigger than a product release. The first generation of meeting intelligence AI has been about documenting conversations, but I believe the next generation should help us become better at having them.

That doesn't mean replacing human judgment or reducing communication to a score, but rather giving people better feedback about one of the most important skills they'll ever develop. If we can help people communicate with a little more awareness, listen a little more closely, and build trust a little more intentionally, that's meaningful work.

That's the future we're building toward at Relate. Vocal Intelligence is simply the next step.
